Shrink Packaging FAQ

To assist our valued machine users and potential buyers, we've compiled a list of frequently asked questions regarding common issues encountered during shrink packaging processes, along with their practical solutions.

Common Shrink Packaging Issues and Solutions

To ensure the highest quality in your packaging process, we have categorized the most frequent shrink wrapping problems into four main groups. Use this guide to quickly diagnose and fix issues on your production line.

1. Appearance Defects (Aesthetic Issues)

These issues affect the visual appeal of the product on the shelf but usually don't compromise the physical protection.

  • "Dog Ears": Protruding triangular corners of the film.

    • Solution: Increase the tunnel temperature or fan speed. Ensure the film size is not too large for the product.

  • "Fish Eyes": Circular wrinkles or patterns on the surface of the film.

    • Solution: Increase air turbulence within the heat tunnel to ensure uniform heat distribution.

  • Ballooning: Trapped air causing the film to puff out.

    • Solution: Check the perforation (air evacuation) pins on the film; ensure there are enough holes for air to escape during shrinking.

3. Sealing and Splicing Issues

Problems related to the sealing bar, wire, or the mechanical joining of the film.

  • Weak Seals / Seal Splitting: The package opens up at the seams.

    • Solution: Check the seal bar temperature and ensure the Teflon tape on the bar is clean and intact.

  • Burnt Residue on Seals: Messy, irregular, or dirty-looking seal lines.

    • Solution: Clean the sealing wire or blade regularly. Optimize the sealing dwell time to prevent over-melting.

2. Heat and Material Damage

Problems caused by incorrect heat settings or timing within the shrink tunnel.

  • Burn Holes: Small holes appearing on the film surface.

    • Solution: Lower the tunnel temperature or increase the conveyor speed to reduce the time the product spends in the heat.

  • Clouding / Haziness: Clear film turning white or losing its transparency.

    • Solution: Reduce excessive heat; high temperatures can break down the polymer structure, causing a "cloudy" look.

4. Mechanical and Operational Issues

Operational difficulties related to machine calibration and product flow.

  • Film Misalignment (Tracking): The film does not sit straight on the product.

    • Solution: Ensure the film roll is centered and the tension (dancer arm) settings are correctly adjusted.

  • Product Tipping: Lightweight products falling over inside the tunnel.

    • Solution: Adjust the airflow direction (internal flaps) or consider a different conveyor belt type for better stability.
